Playing Sages, Giclée prints, Dimensions variable (2014)
Created whilst participating on residency at The Old School, Gorna Lipnitsa, Bulgaria (2014), the series Playing Sages was inspired by the history of the building as a site of learning and the religious iconography present throughout the local community.
Influenced by childhood games of dress-up and make believe, props and costumes were sourced from the school and repurposed to be used in the portraits, as well as a performance ritual, Maths and Mysticism, and a performance video lecture Explaining Maths and Mysticism, so as to create an expanding mythology laden with cryptic symbols that traverse these works.
Appropriating elements from the works of Joseph Beuys and Hugo Ball, with an individual image created for each participant on the residency, the images hope to question the role of the artist as teacher and mystic, and aspire to highlight the importance of play in relation to learning.
